Finding Clarity in Uncertain Times 11.13.20
Dear Students,
Many of you are facing some big decisions right now. You're choosing classes. You're deciding whether to be remote in the spring semester or to look for a job over the break, considering the increase in Covid numbers. You're thinking about what will happen after you graduate and debating the merits of particular majors. You're pondering smaller-scale decisions too: should you text that guy back? should you tell your friend they hurt your feelings? is it worth fighting with your mom about the election or better to drop it?
With so much on your mind - along with the fast pace of academic work - it can be hard to find the inner quiet you need to attend to your own thoughts and feelings. When we feel too busy and overwhelmed to tune in to what's happening inside, it's hard to know what we really want and need.
When you'd like to slow down and find clarity, consider journaling. It's a great way to discover more about you. Writing helps us grow in self-awareness, calm, and insight. It helps us feel more confident in our decisions. And it doesn't have to follow any particular structure or design; write wherever, however, whatever you want.
(One tip: do use a pen, rather than a phone or keyboard. It's better for your brain.)
If you open a blank notebook and aren't sure where to begin, here are a few prompts:
-What makes me angry?
-What helps me calm down when I feel angry?
-Where do I feel the most safe? Why?
-What makes me smile?
-If I could travel back in time and visit myself five years ago, what advice would I share?
-What is one thing that went right today?
-What are the words I most need to hear right now?
-What are three things I really like about myself?
-What scares me?
-What is one thing I hope for?
Good luck with all that decision-making. Call the Student Wellness Center 717-544-9051 to schedule an appointment with a counselor if you could use some extra support.
Warmly,
Lauren, Susan, Katharina, Meagan, Alexis, Kelly and Gene
